Microsoft Declares Rust a Tier-1 Language, Anchored by a New MSVC Codegen Backend

A guest post by a Microsoft engineer on the Rust Foundation site announces that Rust is now a Tier-1 language for internal development at Microsoft, alongside C++, C#, and TypeScript. The technical anchor is rustc_codegen_utc, a new code-generation backend that connects the Rust compiler to the MSVC toolchain, giving Rust and C++ a shared native-code foundation on Windows.

EPA Plans to Eliminate Public Review of Data-Center Pollution Permits

The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed eliminating the federal requirement that states notify the public and allow comment before approving air-pollution permits for industrial facilities, including data centers and the gas-fired power plants built to supply them. A separate proposal would let developers begin construction before permits are approved. The agency says the changes give states discretion and speed up permitting; advocates say they strip away a key channel for communities — particularly Black communities in the rural South, where data-center growth is concentrated — to learn about or oppose projects before permits are signed.
