Ledge.sh transforms traditional Markdown notes into executable documents where code blocks can be run with a simple keyboard shortcut (⌘↩), and their output streams directly beneath the code in the note. Each note maintains its own persistent shell environment, meaning that directory changes (cd), exported variables, or activated virtual environments from one code block execution carry over to subsequent runs in the same note.

Beyond local execution, Ledge.sh supports remote workflows by allowing users to point the application at a machine over SSH. When configured this way, the notes remain stored locally or in a synced folder, but the actual file storage and code execution happens on the remote server. This enables users to close their laptop while long-running processes continue on the server, with output waiting when they reopen the application.

The application also includes features designed for developer workflows such as profile-based secret management (keeping API keys and database URLs outside of notes), built-in MCP server support for AI agent integration, and end-to-end encryption for locked notes. Notes remain as plain Markdown files in ordinary folders, making them compatible with existing sync solutions like git, iCloud Drive, or Dropbox.
