Wube Software, the developer behind the automation game Factorio, has officially released a set of 3D printable models for public use. The collection, which includes 65 individual entities across 15 sets, is available for download on the Printables platform. The project aims to provide fans with high-quality, physical memorabilia that can be assembled and painted, offering a tangible connection to the game's iconic machinery and creatures. The release includes 247 STL files, with variations designed for both push-fit assembly and permanent gluing, catering to different printing capabilities and preferences. Translating Factorio's in-game assets into physical models presented unique technical challenges. Because the game utilizes an isometric perspective, many in-game entities are rendered as collections of objects that appear cohesive only from specific angles, often hiding 'dark spaces' or incomplete geometry that would not function in a 3D-printed form. Artists had to redesign these entities from scratch, ensuring they were structurally sound for FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printing. This involved splitting complex models into smaller, support-free components and reimagining hidden machinery to ensure the physical versions remained faithful to the game's aesthetic while being practical to manufacture at home. The initiative was developed in collaboration with Prusa Research, following a successful experimental printing session during a 2024 playtesting event. By providing these files, Wube intends to encourage community creativity, allowing players to iterate on the designs or create custom dioramas. While the models are designed to be printed in single colors and painted by hand, the developers have noted that they are also compatible with multi-material printing systems, offering further customization for enthusiasts.
