F-Droid has officially launched version 2.0, marking the largest update to its Android application repository client in a decade. The release focuses on modernizing the user experience and the underlying codebase, moving away from legacy components to align with contemporary Android development standards. A central change in F-Droid 2.0 is the complete rewrite of the interface using Jetpack Compose, the standard toolkit for building native Android user interfaces. This shift aims to provide a more familiar experience that integrates with Material Design patterns while reducing technical debt. The navigation has been streamlined into three primary sections: Discover, Search, and My Apps. The Discover tab now includes meta-categories to help users browse the growing ecosystem, while the search functionality has been enhanced to index app descriptions and categories, with improved support for CJK (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) writing systems. Installation and update processes have also been overhauled. F-Droid 2.0 now utilizes the Android 'session' installer, which allows for background updates on recent Android versions without requiring the previously used F-Droid Privileged Extension (FPE). This change simplifies the setup process for users, as FPE is no longer supported in the new version. Additionally, the app now performs automatic update checks by default, removing the need for manual pull-to-refresh gestures. Privacy remains a core focus, with the app continuing to support Tor and proxy configurations. However, the 'panic' feature—which previously allowed users to disguise the app as a calculator—has been simplified to only mask the app icon and name, providing a more transparent indication of the feature's actual protective limits. The project has also discontinued the app-wiping functionality, citing the high maintenance burden relative to its small user base.

The F-Droid 2.0 interface has been completely rewritten using Jetpack Compose, featuring a new Discover tab to help users navigate the ecosystem.

Navigation in the new client is organized into three primary sections, including the My Apps tab which simplifies the management of installed applications.
