The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence (AGMAI) has been established to serve as a formal channel of communication between the mathematical community and the artificial intelligence industry. Hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the group consists of nine distinguished mathematicians, including Terence Tao, Timothy Gowers, and Edward Witten. The formation of the group follows outreach from OpenAI, which sought to establish an external advisory board regarding its internal models' mathematical outputs. In response, the members opted to form an independent entity to maintain autonomy, transparency, and accountability. The group explicitly states that its members do not accept payment for their advisory work and that they lack decision-making power within any AI company. Their primary objective is to provide recommendations on how AI firms should interact with the mathematical community, particularly concerning the responsible disclosure and presentation of mathematical results. Currently, the group is focused on advising OpenAI on the coordination of a large volume of significant mathematical results that the company claims were generated by its internal models. The group has invited input from the broader mathematical community to inform these recommendations, emphasizing that it seeks to protect the long-term prospects of deep human understanding in mathematics amidst rapid technological change.
