WebAssembly Runtimes Are Getting Faster — But It Depends on Which One and What You Run
A 2026 follow-up benchmark of libsodium cryptography across WebAssembly runtimes finds that wasmer leads on speed, but the biggest gains come from enabling the new wide_arithmetic WebAssembly instruction set. Wasmtime improved steadily year over year; Bun jumped sharply between 2025 and 2026; Wazero was flat. The spread between fastest and slowest current results is large: 1.33x native versus 8.77x native.
