markda

Write what you see.

Markda in about a minute (no audio). Recorded from the real extension running in VS Code.

Readable & Writable

No preview pane.
No mode switching.

Write Markdown in one pane, check the result in another, repeat. Markda removes that loop. Type the syntax and it becomes a heading or bold text right where you are, so the page you are writing is the finished document.

Syntax on demand

Syntax appears only
where your cursor is.

Click into bold text and its ** appears; click a heading and you see its ##. Move away and the markers tuck themselves out of sight again. You edit Markdown exactly where you need to and read a clean document everywhere else.

  • Click a checkbox to tick it; Markda writes - [x] into the file
  • Press Enter in a list and the next item is ready, with no markers to retype
  • Type / to insert a table, equation, code block and more

Simple, yet capable

Tables, math and diagrams, on the same page.

Tables, equations and diagrams stay rendered while you edit them. There is no need to drop into source view.

  • Tables — edit cells directly, Tab between them, add and delete rows and columns, drag to reorder, adjust width and alignment
  • Math — rendered in place with KaTeX, with numbered and labeled equations and \eqref references
  • Diagrams — click a Mermaid diagram to open its source; leave it and the diagram is redrawn
  • Code — syntax highlighting, a copy button and a language picker
  • Images — paste or drag and drop to save and insert, into a folder you choose
  • And more — footnotes, reference links, YAML front matter, [toc] and emoji shortcodes

Math and diagrams render locally. Your document is never sent to an online rendering service.

Source preserving

Your file stays
plain Markdown.

Many WYSIWYG editors rewrite the whole document every time you save, quietly changing list markers, emphasis style and blank lines. Markda only changes what you actually edited.

  • The VS Code text document is always the source of truth; untouched text keeps its exact formatting
  • Your Git diffs show only the lines you changed
  • Open the full source any time with </>, with one undo history across both views
  • Stays in sync with split editors and changes from other extensions

Focus on writing

Room to think
while you write.

Focus mode dims everything except the paragraph you are writing. Typewriter mode keeps the current line centered on screen. Save state, word count and the current section sit quietly at the bottom.

  • Focus mode F8 / Typewriter mode F9 / Source view Ctrl+/
  • Adjust font, size, line height and content width to taste

Shortcuts are off by default so they never clash with your existing VS Code keybindings. Turn them on with Markda › Editor: Enable Default Keybindings.

Outline and files

The Outline shows your heading hierarchy and tracks where you are. Fold sections from the marker beside each heading. Move between documents with the Files view, workspace search and Quick Open.

Links that don't break

Broken local links are reported in Problems as you edit. Rename a file and Markda shows every link that points to it, then updates the ones you approve. Backlinks lists the documents that refer to the current one.

Export to HTML and PDF

Export styled HTML, or PDF through the Edge or Chrome you already have. You can also register trusted commands, such as Pandoc, as export targets.

Light & Dark

Light or dark.

Markda follows your VS Code theme automatically and keeps the theme in sync across open Markdown tabs. You can also load your own theme folder.

  • Diagnostics from spell checkers, markdownlint and Vale appear right on the rendered page
  • Interface available in 11 languages
